Waterfront protection

Your seawall is the structure holding your yard in place

Along Florida’s canals, rivers and bays, a bulkhead or seawall retains the soil your lawn, pool, patio and dock sit on. When it works, nobody thinks about it. When it starts to fail, the warning signs are easy to miss.

  • Soil loss starts smallGaps at joints and under the wall let backfill wash out with every tide, often long before a sinkhole appears.
  • Florida conditions are demandingSalt and brackish water, sandy soils, boat wakes and tropical storms all work on a wall at once.
  • Early repairs keep options openMany problems are repairable when caught early. Wait too long and replacement may be the only path.

Who repairs seawalls in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida?

Barefoot Marine Construction, the Jacksonville company that owns and operates Florida Bulk Head, works directly with waterfront owners in Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, Clay, Flagler and Putnam counties. Request an estimate or call (904) 821-5744.

Do you work outside Northeast Florida?

Barefoot Marine Construction does not. For the rest of Florida, Florida Bulk Head reviews your project for an independent participating contractor in your area, subject to availability, and shares your details only with your consent. Check your ZIP code.

What is the difference between a bulkhead and a seawall?

Both are vertical walls at the water's edge. A bulkhead is mainly built to retain soil, typically on calmer canals, rivers and lakes; a seawall is mainly built to resist waves and surge. In Florida the terms are often used interchangeably. Read the full comparison.

How much does seawall work cost in Florida?

It depends on length, material, access, water exposure, the condition of the existing wall, engineering and permits. We do not publish statewide averages; the Florida Bulkhead Cost Report explains each cost driver and the calculator shows how they combine.

Do I need a permit to repair or replace a seawall?

Often, yes, from one or more agencies, though some repair and replacement work qualifies for exemptions or general permits. It depends on the property, the waterway and the scope. Start with our Florida seawall permit guide.
